TV Guide spoke with Caroline Dries and gives us a sneak peak on what to expect as The Vampire Diaries is going into the second half of the season. Be sure to tune in tomorrow night!

The last time we saw the Salvatore brothers onThe Vampire Diaries, their souls had been trapped inside the Phoenix Stone. And if you can believe it, things are about to get a whole lot worse. When the drama returns on Friday (8/7c, CW), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be facing his inner demons head-on, an experience that will leave him reeling throughout the back-half of Season 7 and potentially put his friendship with Bonnie (Kat Graham) in jeopardy.

And Bonnie and Damon aren’t the only beloved pair facing some serious trials this season. Check out what executive producer Caroline Dries reveals about what’s next for Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) and who might not survive this season.

Stefan and Damon are both trapped in the Phoenix Stone. What can you reveal about their different experiences inside?

Caroline Dries: Episode [10] will be primarily in Damon’s experience of the Phoenix Stone. Through the course of the season, Damon struggled with his relationship with his mom and his willingness to open up his heart to her, open up his heart to the concept of forgiveness. So the Phoenix Stone in our minds is like one’s own personal hell, handcrafted specifically for the person who gets stabbed with that sword. So for Damon, we get to explore the consequences of his inability to forgive people, and the mistakes he’s made in the past surface and he needs to deal with them.

The soul put inside Jo’s body didn’t remember her past or who she was. Is that a potential side effect facing either Damon or Stefan?

Dries: It’s a side effect if they don’t figure out how to get the soul into the right body. Jo’s soul was never in that stone, so they didn’t understand how the science of it worked. Now, the guys understand that if your soul is in that stone and your body is still corporeal, in a way you can fix it so the soul returns to your body. So that’s a minor complication as they figure out, “We’ve got to do this spell right since we’ve seen it go horribly wrong.”

In the first half of the season, Stefan and Damon were very divided over how they felt towards Lily (Annie Wersching). Now that their mother is dead, and under such heartbreaking circumstances, will that affect their relationship?

Dries: It will affect their relationship, but it’s more about how Damon’s ability or inability to deal with it just makes things worse in Damon’s life in general. His relationship with Lily is a microcosm for Damon’s relationship with the world. I think once he figures out how to not be selfish in every single situation that involves his emotions, he won’t really be able to move on in any relationship, and that involves his relationship with his brother too.

Julie Plec gives us some insights into last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries.

Dead Santa Shenanigans:

In the Santa bar, Todd Lasance (Julian) went to lift one of the dead Santa dummies only to jump when he realized it was an actual person.
During shooting, one of the dead Santas fell asleep and started to snore, ruining a take.

Tidbits from set:

In the spirit of the holidays (even though it was October), episode 709 was big on family visits. Both Ian’s [Somerhalder] and Candice’s [King] moms came to hang out and watch the magic happen.
Did Caroline and Alaric’s hippie birthing coach seem authentic? She should, because in real life she lives on a commune.
The flash of the Civil War battlefield at the end gave us a glimpse of what Damon would be going through in the next episode. Damon in “hell” is the first “concept” episode we’ve ever done. It’s a great episode, all about Damon’s experience in the hell that the Phoenix Stone creates. Join us on Jan. 29 when we move to Fridays and launch our next chapter. As for what Stefan goes through, you’ll have to wait and see.

Julie Plec shares how they came up with the story of Caroline being pregnant!

It’s Thanksgiving in Mystic Falls, and what would Thanksgiving on The Vampire Diaries be without pie, family drama, murderous intentions, and magical babies? “Mommie Dearest” was written by Chad Fiveash & James Stoteraux, a writing team I first got the pleasure of working with on Kyle XY. Director Tony Solomons is also our editor/co-producer and this is his TVD directorial debut.

It seems like the most important topic of Thanksgiving Dinner conversation is the Caroline Forbes mystical pregnancy bombshell. A little backstory on how this came to pass: In trying to figure out how to put Alaric on a good path for season 7, we felt so terrible about having slaughtered not just his wife but also his twins that we started asking ourselves if perhaps that Gemini spell that the coven chanted at Kai before he died was a way to protect the babies to ensure they’d be born. That led us to a pitch where we thought a stranger would knock on his door one day and reveal she’s carrying his children as a result of said Gemini spell. In the meantime, we cooked up the story where Valerie tells Stefan he could have been a father. With fatherhood and babies on the brain, we were enjoying the thematic symmetry of these stories when all of the sudden we got a phone call from Candice King telling us she was three months pregnant.

This was two weeks before we shot episode one. We had already broken the first chapter of the season. Nina [Dobrev] was gone and Caroline and Bonnie were meant to take center stage as the show’s central heroines, and suddenly we were faced with potentially having to shoot Candice behind purses, shopping bags, kitchen counters and eventually have to write her out of the show for at least six episodes so she could give birth. We couldn’t make her pregnant, because everyone knows vampires can’t get pregnant. As we stared at each other, wondering what to do, we had a collective realization that we could make Caroline the “stranger” who became the surrogate to the future of the Gemini Coven. It was a story already on the table. It fit perfectly to have Caroline become a mother just as Stefan comes to terms with never being a father. The pieces all fit. It went from a serious problem to a serendipitous opportunity.

I called my bosses at the studio and the network, telling them that I had potentially the most ridiculous crazy-bananas way to write in Candice’s pregnancy. The response was, “Julie, we’ve heard crazy-bananas out of you before. This isn’t as crazy as you think it is.” So we went for it, full throttle. And now we’re 15 scripts into the season in our writers’ room and it’s working like a charm. And before the trolls go to town, I suggest you just go with it. It’s a deeply emotional ride.

I’ve been holding off posting this article from E!Online in case anyone was behind on watching Thursday’s episode of The Vampire Diaries … but here is some info about the new twist on the show which factor’s in Candice’s pregnancy!

We now have an answer to the question of whether The Vampire Diaries would write in star Candice King’s pregnancy or hide it with strategically placed bags, clothing and furniture a la Olivia Pope. At the end of the shocker of an episode “Best Served Cold,” we found out something truly life-changing for the college student (yes, as we were reminded last week, she’s still in school!).

Caroline Forbes is pregnant! But not with her boyfriend Stefan Salvatore’s baby—with the twins of her former teacher (AND FUTURE FIANCE) Alaric Saltzman. Whaaaaa?

Turns out, the TVD writers have come up with a genius way to write in the pregnancy despite the fact that vampires can’t get pregnant. After Kai slaughtered his sister, Jo, on the alter after having just said “I do” to Alaric, the twins she was carrying were saved via magical spell and implanted into someone else. And, thanks to Valerie, we know who that someone is: Caroline.

Executive producer Caroline Dries teased after a screening of last week’s episode that Caroline would face some character-defining struggles in the near future, and now we know what those struggles will be.

“She is going to find, I think, an inner strength that she didn’t know she had,” Dries teased. “I like the character most when she’s not feeling insecure.”

Plus, Caroline’s got BFF Bonnie by her side for added support. “It is nice to check in with them. They are the most normal dynamic and relatable people on the show, in my opinion,” Dries added. “So they will continue to be friends as Caroline goes through her drama with Stefan and she will have more drama coming her way.”

And let’s not forget about the other bombshell of the week that the writers dropped in the time jump scene: That the mysterious fiance Caroline was referring to in a previous flash-forward is none other than Alaric Saltzman, and the mysterious person who’s after our heroes in the future is holding her hostage at her news station.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
